CARING FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP

CARING FOR LEATHER

Halo leathers are typically aniline, ensuring that the natural richness and feel of the leather’s original surface is maintained and celebrated as much as possible. Real leather is a natural product and as such, will often bear the hallmarks of its origin. Characteristics including scars, branding marks, creases and areas of grain variance are not detrimental to the durability of the product, they emphasise that authentic hides have been used rather than printed reproductions.

The natural and uncoated finish of Halo leathers may acquire marks or colour discrepancies through wear and tear, for example when coming into contact with belt buckles or studding. This is normal and enriches the leather’s character and individuality over time. Halo leathers wear in, not out, growing more beautiful with age.

Halo offers a variety of leathers with different textures and finishes. It is important to note that softer hides may well develop wrinkles and creases during their first few weeks of use. This is normal and not a cause for concern.

Leather is naturally durable and one of the easiest upholstery materials to look after. Well-made leather furniture is an investment, and with a little bit of love and attention it can last for generations. We offer the following advice to help you care for your leather upholstery.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE:

Lightly dust and vacuum on a regular basis.
Do not place your leather too close to a heat source, as it may cause it to crack and age prematurely.
Protect your leather from direct sunlight and moonlight, as it may cause it to fade, discolour or crack. All leathers will fade over time, but darker colours may fade faster in direct sunlight.
Avoid sitting on the arms, back or very edge of your leather furniture as this may cause distortion and/or damage.
Be aware that clothing with transferable dyes, such as blue jeans, could transfer the dye onto light-coloured leather furniture.
Never use “standard” cleaning products to remove dust, spills or stains from leather. Refer to the specialist care instructions below or use a reputable and recognised professional leather specialist.

SPECIALIST CARE:

On a number of our hides, specialist leather wipes and creams may be used. We recommend certain Leather Master [http://leathermasteruk.com] products [Protection Cream Cloth and Pull Up Cream] to care for our leathers.

CARING FOR TEXTILES
Halo textiles include a wide palette of upholstery, from the sumptuous glamour of Vintage Moleskin to the relaxed feel of cool, fresh linens. Halo textiles offer a luxurious and tactile experience, exquisitely crafted and beautiful to the touch.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE:

Vintage Moleskin
Vintage Moleskin is reminiscent of more opulent times, sumptuously soft to the touch with a gorgeous velvety texture. Our signature vintage wash locks in the rich colour for a truly special finish, suited to any form. Vintage Moleskin is 86% cotton and 14% polyester.
Spot clean using a mild, water-free solvent or dry cleaning product and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Water-based cleaning products may create water stains.
Always test the cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first.
A very soft brush (such as a baby’s hairbrush) can be used to brush the nap of the upholstery while cleaning.
Note, the colour of the upholstery may appear to change depending on the direction of the nap and the angle the product is viewed from.
For more extensive cleaning consult a professional upholstery cleaner.

Galata Linen
Our 100% hemp Galata Linen is a thick, heavy linen with a textured canvas weave. This range of fabrics are first pigment dyed and then undergo our signature vintage washing to create a truly unique appearance and soft hand-feel.

Cirrus Linen
A pure, 100% linen, Cirrus is first pigment-dyed and then heavily washed to achieve a super-soft hand-feel. This fine linen has a light, fresh look for relaxed summery comfort all-year round.

Village Linen
A linen cotton blend that’s soft to the touch, crafted from 70% cotton and 30% linen. A fairly durable fabric, Teflon-coated to give some added protection against water, oil and stains.

Caring for all linens:
Professional cleaning is recommended, for both spot cleaning and more extensive cleaning.
Furniture with slipcovers: The slipcover should be removed and professionally dry cleaned.

CARING FOR TIMBER

All Halo timber furniture is handcrafted by our master artisans, using either reclaimed timber with its rugged, aged appearance, or new timber, sourced from hand-selected quality hardwoods.

RECLAIMED TIMBER
Provenance of materials is very important to Halo, and pure, natural materials are sought out from whichever corner of the earth offers the best quality. Our reclaimed wood is salvaged from sources including Edwardian houses, disused gymnasiums old Chinese doors. All the wood is carefully selected and treated in the Halo workshop. Our master craftsmen take great pride in hand-finishing the timber using traditional artisanal methods.

Reclaimed wood is rife with character, and often has small cracks and signs of weathering or evidence of its former life. At Halo, we believe in celebrating and preserving all those ‘imperfections’ in the wood, respecting the passage of time and the idea that time actually makes things more beautiful. Each piece is unique, and each tells a different story. Some residual marks will appear over time with use, this adds to the patina of the piece and makes it more storied, more unique and more beautiful.

Black and Oak Parquet
Handcrafted from genuine English oak parquet flooring reclaimed from disused buildings in the UK, around 100 years old, and laid into a black timber frame. Each block is carefully washed by hand and laid block by block for a rustically uneven surface with a matt finish. Genuine reclaimed parquet is used, therefore wood colour and pattern will vary from piece to piece.

Old Door
This solid elm wood finish is handcrafted from reclaimed traditional Chinese doors, rich in history and character.

Parquet Oak
Handcrafted from genuine English oak parquet flooring, reclaimed from disused buildings in the UK. Each block is carefully washed by hand and then laid block by block, creating a rustically uneven surface, full of unique character. Genuine reclaimed parquet is used, therefore wood colour and pattern will vary from piece to piece.

Reclaimed Maple Strip
Maple is one of the hardest woods, making it very durable. Our Reclaimed Maple Strip finish is crafted from timber that’s around 50 years old, salvaged from disused gymnasiums and bowling alleys in the UK.

Skyline
A myriad of different reclaimed timbers give rich colour, texture and character to this distinctive finish. Handcrafted from small blocks of timber including salvaged oak, pine, boat wood and Genuine English Reclaimed Timber. The blocks are laid by hand to create a distinctively uneven surface which adds to the rugged look of this piece.

NEW TIMBER
Halo’s new timber finishes are handcrafted from solid hardwoods, adding warmth and character to your home.

Sandshore
Oak timber is sand-blasted to create an extremely textural surface full of unique character, with tactile ridges and cracks for an aged look. Sandshore Natural has a raw, unfinished appearance, while the white, grey and black finishes have a matt colour stain with the wood grain still visible underneath.

Antique Oak, Light Oak and Nibbed Oak
Premium quality hand-selected oak is treated with a translucent stain to accentuate all the natural characteristics and beautiful grain of the timber. Available in Light Oak for a light-coloured finish, Nibbed Oak for a rich honey colour or Antique Oak for a darker, vintage look. Nibbed Oak is nibbed by hand for a more distressed look.

Light and Nuit
A varnish is applied in Light or Nuit finish for an even colour, adding a subtle sheen to the wood’s surface and offering some protection from everyday wear and tear. Available exclusively on our Plum collection.

Oiled Oak
The strength and character of solid, sturdy oak is oiled to accentuate the natural beauty of the wood and offer some protection. The warmth of the wood is mixed with the crisp clean lines of the Oregon collection for a contemporary look.

Saloon and Saloon Natural
A rugged vintage looking finish, accentuating the natural grain of the wood. Its aged, distressed look has been achieved by hand and includes dents and small cracks for a textural surface. Saloon Natural undergoes a six stage hand-finishing process and has a lighter colour than Saloon.

Weathered Oak
Known as the king of British boat woods, slow growing oak gives a superior quality and dense grain. Oak furniture improves with age and often outlasts its owners.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE:

Wipe tabletops with a diluted solution of mild detergent and warm water after each use or meal. Always clean the whole tabletop rather than one area, to avoid any patches of discoloration over time.
Always wipe up spills as soon as possible and dry with a soft cloth.
Avoid using any acidic or high alkaline based cleaners, or products containing bleach, ammonia, alcohol or petroleum.
For persistent spots, gently clean with a soft cloth and a solution of warm water and mild detergent. Wipe dry.
Avoid furniture polish as over time it can accumulate and leave a residue. Remove dust with a soft, dry, untreated cloth.

PREVENTATIVE CARE:

Preventative measures should be taken to avoid stains, scratches and water marks on your wood furniture.
Moisture and heat can damage any wood finish. Protect your furniture by using coasters and placemats to prevent marks, stains and scratches.
Maintain consistent humidity levels to minimize seasonal expansion and contraction of wood and prevent warping and major cracks or splits. Slight cracks are normal wear and part of the beauty of each individual piece.
Over time, air and sunlight will change the colour of natural wood. Occasionally rotate the items placed on your wood furniture to allow a more uniform colour to develop.

ADDITIONAL CARE:

Skyline
Due to the uneven surface of Skyline, we recommend you dust or vacuum the surface of your furniture daily to prevent dust accumulation.

Black & Oak Parquet, Old Door, Parquet Oak and Reclaimed Maple Strip
Conditioning oil can be applied and will help avoid staining but it will alter the wood colour. Only use conditioning/mineral oil if you are happy to permanently change the colour of the wood.
To protect against stains, we suggest using Monocoat. To find out more about this product and to find your nearest retailer, please visit www.monocoat.us in the US, or www.monocoat.uk in the UK.
Severe stains may be removed by lightly sanding with fine sandpaper (320-grit recommended) followed by a wipe with a damp cloth. We recommend you consult a specialist.

CARING FOR MARBLE

Marble is one of the most beautiful natural materials, used by the Romans and Ancient Greeks for its crisp, clean and cool effect. Incredibly durable, marble’s translucency gives a unique visual depth beyond its surface for those natural patterns to shine through. No two slabs are alike and will each mark and etch differently. Honed marble has a matt appearance compared to polished marble.

Marble is porous and can be easily stained, scratched or chipped. A water repellent finish is applied to our marble to give some protection, this will not repel acidic substances.

After regular use, your marble top will develop its own unique patina in which light spots, streaks or rings that can be felt by hand will develop. This is completely normal and unavoidable, and cannot be undone without the surface being refinished. As with any natural material, this aging process enriches your furniture and gives it that special character and soul. By following the care instructions below, you can keep your marble looking beautiful for many years to come.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE:

Spilled liquids can leave a permanent mark. Spills and ring marks should be wiped off immediately.
Protect your marble from hot, wet or abrasive objects by using coasters, trivets and placemats.
Protect from acidic substances like wine, coffee, fruit juice, tomato sauce and nail polish remover. Blot spills immediately and rinse with a clean, damp cloth.
Dust frequently with a clean, soft cloth to minimize scratches and wear patterns that can develop from everyday use.
Clean your marble top on a regular basis with a clean, non-abrasive cloth, sponge, or mop, dampened with warm water. In addition, using a neutral cleaner specifically formulated for natural stone will help remove soils that normal dusting or damp mopping leave behind.
Do not use general purpose cleaners, furniture polish or products that contain bleach, lemon, vinegar, or other acids, as these may etch the marble surface or damage the polish. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.

CARING FOR METAL

Our Matt Black finish is powder coated for a neutral, modern style that looks great contrasted with other materials such as glass. This hardwearing finish requires minimal maintenance.
